IAFF Local 3544 first voted to become unionized and members in good standing with the International Association of Firefighters on March 24 1994 in Springfield Twp. Holland Ohio. This local was established to improve working conditions for the firefighter/paramedics within the Springfield Twp. Fire Department. The original roster consisted of eight (8) members (Brad Lowe, Ken Gummow, Jim Harrison, Heidi Hess, Steve Munson, Roy Bechtel, Bill Montrie, and Rick Helminski) plus the Chief of EMS (Robert Ried). Currently, local 3544 has grown to thirty seven (37) members.
These original members adopted a constitution and by-laws for the union which ensured that they would be treated fairly. Our Local is committed to the welfare of our members and that of the citizens of Springfield Twp. and the Village of Holland.
We continue to meet with the township through negotiations and Labor-Management meetings to address issues such as staffing, safety, cost saving measures, etc. It is our hope that we can help find solutions to our problems that benefits the community, the township, the Village of Holland and our members.
